THE CAPS LOCK KEY

One of peoples biggest pet peeves used to be hitting the CAPS LOCK key by accident and forgetting it was on.

While the Keyboard does have a light to indicate the CAPS LOCK key is activated, until now there was no audio warning. Now you can configure Windows XP to give you a BEEP when when you hit the CAPS LOCK key. It comes in real handy for us and will for you too. Here's how to set it up, it's very easy: Go to control panel, Accessibility Options and place a checkmark next to the "Use Toggle Keys" option.

A Num Lock Key Trick

Windows XP Home and Professional

Most of us never use the Num Lock key. Some of us don't even know where it is or even care where it is. But here is a little trick using the Num Lock key that is really useful. So, in case you don't know where the Num Lock key is, it's at the top of the Numeric Keypad on your keyboard. See it? Good!

Did you know if you hold that key down for 5 seconds you can turn on Accessibility Options that will cause your computer to beep whenever you accidentally hit the Caps Lock key Scroll Lock key or the Num Lock key? Well it does, try it!

Hold down the Num Lock key for five seconds (a light will come on indicating the Num Lock key is depressed - no it's not depressed because your pressing on it - or maybe it is!)

When the light goes out (in about 5 seconds, a dialog window will appear and tell you that you've turned your Accessibility Options and if you want to keep them on to click OK. And you should click OK because that's the entire point of this trick!

Windows XP Utilities

Useful Windows XP Utilities You Can Install From Your Windows XP CD

Did you know that your Windows XP CD-ROM contains many handy utilities you can install? It does - but they're not installed by default. Why? We don't know. But, you can install them anytime you wish - A couple of them like the Duplicate File Finder and Windiff, which lets you compare directories and files are very useful. All you have to do is install them. Here's a list of some of the utilities available on the Windows XP CD (both Home and Professional) and how to install any of them

A few of the more useful utilities are:

dupfinder - Finds duplicate files
windiff - Compare files and directories
netdiag - Diagnoses many network problems and components
diruse - Shows disk usage
hostname - Displays the host name of the computer
getmac - Gets the MAC address of the network card - useful for networking
pviewer - Shows a list of processes - Get memory detail or kill any process

How To Install any or all of these utilities:

Insert your Windows XP CD-ROM in your CD drive. In the \Support\Tools directory, there are a lot of additional support and troubleshooting utilities, including the ones above. Run SETUP from that directory to install any of them - one at a time of course.

Bonus Tip!

Create A Shortcut to "Suspend" Your Computer
Windows XP

Did you know you can create an icon on your desktop you can use to suspend your computer? You can and here's how:

Right click on the Desktop
New / Shortcut
Enter in rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll, SetSuspendState

Give it whatever name you like - just make sure it's descriptive! Now when you click on that shortcut, your computer will shutdown and suspend. Easy as pie

Disk Cleanup (XP)

A Better Disk Cleanup
Windows XP

This tip will show you how to create an unattended automated disk cleanup which will also empty your Prefetch folder. This tip assumes you have Windows XP installed in c:\windows most do)

Step 1.
Create a new text file and place the following contents inside:

c:\windows\system32\cleanmgr.exe /dc /sageset: 1
c:
cd \
cd c:\windows\prefetch
del *.* /q

Step 2.
Save the file as clean.bat (be sure to save it with the "Save as type" set to All Files and not Text Documents - if you don't remember to change the "Save as type" to "All File" this file will not work.)

Step 3.
Execute the file. This will run the Disk Cleanup program in a special mode which asks what items you will want cleaned when Disk Cleanup performs an unattended cleanup. Check the items you wish to have cleaned up, then click OK.

Step 4.
Right-click on the clean.bat file and click edit. Change the first line to read:

c:\windows\system32\cleanmgr.exe /dc /sagerun: 1

Step 5.
Save the file. You can execute this file in place of running Disk Cleanup, or, to have this program run unattended, run the Add Scheduled Task Wizard in the Control Panel and create a scheduled task using the clean.bat file you just created.

Note: This cleanup script will also clear windows Prefetch directory. Often this directory can become cluttered with old application and a cleaning would free up disk space. Removing old Prefetch files might result in a one-time decrease in the speed with which applications open as Windows has to rebuild the Prefetch cache again. However, the change is so slight most of us will not notice it.

A trick to use when managing pages without having to constantly use the move up/down

Highlight the page you want to move up, click move up once, then hold down the enter button watch it fly up the slots.

Creating Pages: There is a trick to make even your custom pages unique.

When you create a page the first thing you see in the page name box is "Your Web Page". If you don't change that before hitting the create page button it will become part of your page URL. This can be quite confusing later when trying to sort and organize pages.

Note: You can't later change that portion of your page URL. (The link name will always remain the same) Only the page name on the navigation bar to your left can be changed.

To keep your group pages User Friendly follow these steps:

Create a page with the name you want for your link,
click create page.

Now click on your new page and click edit page.

Add your content and you won't get a page link with http://groups.msn.com/ComputerResources/yourwebpage.msnw

Instead of simply re-naming a page when you are done with a theme or just want something different. Just create a page with the new name and transfer the old/ edited content to the new page. Then you can delete the outdated page.

You want to hide that navigation bar and have a page that looks like a real webpage. Where here's how:

After you create your page, hide it and put a clickable link on your front page for viewing. Don't save yet! You need to edit the link in order to get the page without the nav bar. (This is assuming you know how to add links to your pages)

Click on your globe click in the area just before the words "groups.msn.com/, type in moneycentral. in front so that it looks like this:

http://moneycentral.group.msn.com/Your-Group-Name/Page-Name

Note: The part in Red will be what comes after the "groups.msn.com" originally. (If you need to type the "new" url by hand make sure you put in your group name with no spaces and the actual page name that you used when you created the page after the /that comes after "groups.msn.com".)

Archive or Back up a custom page

1. Open your page to the page builder, by clicking on edit this page.
2. Click on the HTML editor.
3. Put your curser on any part of the code, select all by using Ctrl A.
4. Copy by using Ctrl C.
5. Paste the information to NOTE PAD.
6. On the note pad file menu choose "save as"
7. At the screen that comes up type the name of the page you are saving.
8. In the save as window choose the folder you wish to save in and click save.
10. Back at your open page click on cancel.

When you need to use your saved page, open your "My Documents" or where ever your pc saves your notepad files and simply copy back to the html editor (using Ctrl V) of the page where you want the information. Save

You can also create a site and make it private and unlisted just for storing your backup pages. If you do that be sure to post on it often enough to keep it active so MSN does not delete it. NOTE: You can also use photobucket to store your images in (In their raw form) and save storage used.

: : Deleting Threads/Replies : :

Sometimes you may wish to delete a message/reply, or you wish to delete an entire thread. Perhaps you just want to delete the whole board. Here are some tips on how to do this.

Thread deletions: - Only Managers can perform this task

Click on the thread

There will be a delete button right above the first post.

Clicking that delete button will remove the entire thread as well as all the replies on that thread.

Message/Reply deletions:

Locate the message you wish to delete

Use the delete button that's located on the first line of each post next to the reply and recommend links. (Each post has their own delete button)
If you have multiple posts there is a Delete Replies button under the very first posting. Clicking on that will put check boxes in front of each post. Choose which replies you wish to delete and then click the Delete Checked Replies button.

This second option can only be performed by a member of management.

: : Going to an earlier message : :

Check this out. A great tip to find an earlier message instead of using the first, previous button at the bottom of each thread. In the address bar you will see the URL of any message you are presently viewing. Look at the sample below. Where it says 10 in brown just change that number to the post you're looking for and go to that page. Saves time of having to go through multiple pages.

If you want to get to the first post (the welcome post from MSN Groups), then use the following URL.

To see the message list of the first 50 theads, use the following URL. You can change the number in red to see the 50 threads prior to the number specified.

Please remove the words "GROUPNAMEHERE" place your own groupname where indicated.

A trick to use when managing pages without having to constantly use the move up/down

Highlight the page you want to move up, click move up once, then hold down the enter button watch it fly up the slots.

Creating Pages: There is a trick to make even your custom pages unique.

Note: You can't later change that portion of your page URL. (The link name will always remain the same) Only the page name on the navigation bar to your left can be changed.

To keep your group pages User Friendly follow these steps:

Create a page with the name you want for your link,
click create page.

Now click on your new page and click edit page.

Add your content and you won't get a page link with http://groups.msn.com/ComputerResources/yourwebpage.msnw

It is possible that the problem you are experiencing is related to a corruption in the Paint Shop Pro registry settings. This following procedure will delete these registry settings. The next time Paint Shop Pro is launched, it will recreate the settings and behave like a fresh installation. If Paint Shop Pro is running, close it prior to beginning this procedure.

1. Left-Click on the following link, or copy and paste it into the address bar of your web browser: http://www2.jasc.com/pub/ZapJasc.exe
2. A window will open asking you want you want to do with the file. Choose Save.
3. A window will open asking where you wish to save the file. Save the ZapJasc.exe to a location where you will be able to easily find the file. We recommend the Windows Desktop.
4. Once the utility has completed downloading, browse to the location of the saved file. Double left-click on it to launch.
5. From the Product Drop-down menu, choose Paint Shop Pro 7, 8 or 9.Note: If you have a Dell Computer please select the Dell edition of your program.
6. Under Actions, add a checkmark next to Remove Registry keys.
7. Choose begin to remove the registry settings. Once the entire process is complete, launch Paint Shop Pro. It will act like a fresh installation.
