In recent months the most common form of "hacking" passports has been done through what is called "phishing". This method involves the posting of a link which when clicked takes the person to what appears to be a real MSN Groups, .NET, or MSN Hotmail sign in page. The person then enters their email address and password thinking they are signing into their passport but what they are really doing is giving that information to the "Phisher" who then uses it to take over their passport, having access to their email, all of their groups, any personal information they've given, and even their credit card info if they use the MSN wallet.
They most commonly get their victims by offering something that sounds too good to be true. It sounds like that because IT IS!
You can protect yourself from this simply by paying attention. When you're already signed into your passport and you get a sign in page, BE SUSPICIOUS! When you click a link provided by someone other then MSN and end up on a sign in page - BE SUSPICIOUS!. Don't enter ANY INFORMATION. Never sign into your passport on a page that you got to from anywhere other then a link you use all the time.
Instead go to your group from a link you know to be valid and see if it shows your name at the top where it normally shows as member/manager/assistant manager. If it does, you don't need to sign in and you most likely just protected your passport.
Every day I go to a link to my group that is in my favorites and click the sign in button from there. That way I KNOW I'm getting a legitimate sign in page.
These scams are becoming very popular now and are very effective because people are falling for it. The only way to protect yourself is to PAY ATTENTION to where you enter your information.
The second most popular scam is people asking you to make them a manager of your group, most often claiming they are from MSN. MSN does not need to be made a manager of your group to do anything. Some will offer to make a page or fix one if you make them a manager. NEVER make anyone a manager of your group that you don't know. No matter how convincing they may sound about having to be made manager. If they offer to fix a page, Copy the page into a message and let them fix it by posting the fix into a message. They don't need to be manager or assistant to do that.
There are bad people out there. They thrive on making your life miserable and destroying your hard work. Don't give them the thrill. If you don't know for sure it's legitimate, go to http://groups.msn.com/browse.msnw?catid=16 where you will find a whole list of help groups. Go to any one of them and ask.

Ever wonder why some groups require you to hide your e-mail address?
Some may think why should I? or How am I supposed to get mail from the group, etc.?
Well here are a few reasons:
- Spammers/bots - These are not real people as some may think but bots that harvest your e-mail addy to send you advertising for some adult items, or for some quick rich scheme or other nonsense type item. Or, to even infect you with a virus or two. Be very careful of opening any attachments from your e-mail.
- Stalkers, Pediofiles, offenders, etc. - These are real people whose only purpose is to threaten, harrass and cause undue stress on you or your child. These are dangerous preditors regardless of where you live. Some of these may even be hackers and all they need is your e-mail addy and a few pieces of info to mess up your life.
- Hackers - Though they are along the same lines as stalkers, they're only purpose is to mess up your internet. They don't want to stalk you or even harm you personally. They are just amused when you go online to find everything gone. They don't care about the countless of memories you might have stored in your e-mail accounts or on your computer. Also and the main reason MSN groups want you to hide your e-mail addy is they can delete your MSN group, remove important pages, hijack your account and post messages under your account that will cause your members to lose trust in your leadership.
- Personal safety - any reason not listed above but important enough to protect yourself from unwanted mail. Credit card fraud, account hacking, not just e-mails but bank accounts and other important info.
There is plenty more reasons why you should hide your e-mail address from everyone except those you truely trust. Play it save and hide your addy!

Even with your email address marked as hidden, if you post or respond by email instead of coming in person to the group, here is what happens.

If you have a member that is receiving all of the group emails to their inbox, some or, most email services can be configured to show all of the information from the sender including your home IP, (Where you are sending email from) The location of the first ISP server that your email passes through, the main ISP Ip, then but not important, it will also show the server IP of the receiving Msn IP and the server IP that actually posts it to the group.
With this much information on you, I or anyone who is technicaly aware can send you bots or set up trojans or script kittys on your computer that will show us each key stroke you type for passwords etc. we can then hack into any or all of your email accounts with the password. Fact is most email accounts can be hacked into without even ever going onto your computer by a good hacker. Worse yet. This information I can easily gather just from receiving posts that you sent to your group by email I can or anyone who is a tech can within a very short time find out where your house is and your phone number.
I can almost bet you that most Msn groups do have email harvestors just sitting on their computers waiting for mailed email information to either sell to spammers or worse.
By experience I keep email harvestors and bots out of all the groups which I manage but still there can always be someone who is smart enough to make a few posts to show they are ok and be the wolf in sheep clothing.
2. Do not use your manager passport to post on message boards (even in sites where it isn't a manager).
The reason I just mentioned is why.
Somewhere I have a copy of a sent by email post I set up my email to show all of this info on. I will find it and re-post it here if it will help you to understand the dangers of posting by email. Danger for your groups and could be dangers for you.

All I had to do was to know how to change the way my email server received information about the sender and look at all the info I got just by watching a few sample posts through my email.
Now Imagine professional email harvestors who join groups and have every message sent to their email. Worse yet. Imagine a slightly computer literate bad guy who seeks to harm your groups through your email accounts or worse to harm you by finding you.
Quit using the easy Msn email reply and posting capability. You expose yourself like this everytime you do. Go to your groups in person. It is really easy to do. When you read a post you want to reply to simply click the name of the group and you are there without all the emailing problems.

Every bit of her personal information was showing in this original post made to here from her mailbox. I wish I could show all of you just how dangerous it is to post and reply from your mailboxes. This post was showing a potential hacker, thief, rapist, etc. Every piece of information he or she would need to not only break into this email account it was also showing, but also the IP of her ISP that is the actual ISP server this originated through after it left her computer and Get This. The actual IP of her computer that sent this message. A person who has the tools and the knowledge can break this in a matter of minutes to find her phone number, street address etc.

I like to say this on the subject. Any email program will show what said. Now bear with me on this. Most hackers wouldn't waste the time this way for it takes lots of work. Not unless they know from the group here you are a rich person and want to hack in and get your key strokes for your pass word to your bank. But doing it this way takes a lots of work which hackers won't usually do. But being careful isn't a bad idea.
The next thing I want to bring up is this. In oder to get a spyware or as said a kitty script, you will have to download it. You do that by clicking on an attactment with the email. In most cases it will have a heading that might cause you to click on the attachment. Like you just won a two weeks prepaid vacation for two. Click on the attachment for details. In this case don't. If you won anything it should be from something you had enter in to start with. So don't click on any attachment from people you don't know. If it is someone you know and wasn't expecting anything like the attachment, then send a email back to that person questioning them on it.
The other thing is called Phishing. They send you a email stating your account is about to expire. Click on the link to update it. Never, I mean never click on any link in a email that is about your account. It is a false email and the web page will look like the real thing but it is false. If you have doubts about your account then go to the web page you know is true and sign in and then update anything if it looks like it needs to be updated.
Now back to the email addresses. I have mine hidden for the main reason of bots. The bots goes through out the web looking for email addresses. They hit web sites a lot. If you have a web page with your email address on it then that bot can and will harvest it. Most web savvy people now put in something extra that will cause it to bounce if a bot harvests it. But they will have a message telling others what to do to send to the correct address. The bots won't see that and therefore will harvst the email as you have it. Example-- Let us say your email address is JohnBlow@blowhead.com Now there is a few ways to fix this so a bot can't use this. One way is to add another @ in there It will then be like this JohnBlow@@blowhead.com . The person will then leave instructions to remove one of the @. Another way is to seperate each word. Like so---John Blow @ blowhead.com Or maybe like this. JohnBlow @ blowhead.com . The bots can't see the instructions that are posted. A bot is a program and it is programmed to do one thing. To harvest email addresses.
Back to the spyware and other scripts. If you have your computer set correctly then it will warn you if something is trying to download onto your computer. Nothing can download on your computer unless you click OK. Same with a virus in an email. It can only get on your computer if you click on it and let it in.
Now I have heard about the peer to peer file sharing programs. There are a lots of viruses on those programs. So stay away from those type programs unless you have a good anti-virus protection.
That is about it. Nothing can get on your computer unless you let it. If you think you might have spyware then get a good spyware program from a reliable dealer. Don't download it from the internet unless one of the computer magazine has pointed you to it.

Queenie just wanted to pop in and let you know what's been happening.I have given up HOP and handed it over to Scorps, who knows if and when i will start another one.
I am starting an HTML course and then want to do a Web Design course and hopefully i will be setting up my own Website outside of MSN.
I have left most of the groups i belong to but wanted to stay here, i do pop in now and then to check whats new. Just wanted to keep you up to scratch on the news.Hugs LB
